Manchester United closed to within 1 point of league leaders Chelsea after beating Manchester City at Eastlands.

Paul Scholes had a brilliant afternoon and sealed victory with a powerful header past City Keeper Shay Given into the bottom corner of the net in the 93rd minutes with just 17 seconds remaining on the clock.

The game proved to be a typical derby with very little to choose between the two sides. At times, the game was tense with neither side creating many clear cut chances.

However, United veteran Paul Scholes who has just signed a new 1 year contract, controlled the midfield and it was fitting that he should provide the late, late winner.

Manchester United's dream of winning the Prenmier League for a record fourth consecutive year took a major blow when they were held to a goaless draw by Blackburn.

Despite controlling much of the possession United lacked any cutting edge. Wayne Rooney was out with injury and Berbatov played the striker role.

Chelsea remain top 1 point ahead of United with a game in hand. Arsenal are in 3rd place.

Champions League QF 2nd Leg 07/04/2010 (4 - 4 agg) Bayern win on away goals

Manchester United got off to a blistering start and were 2 - 0 up after just 7 minutes. Darren Gibson opened the scoring with a terrific shot from a Wayne Rooney lay off. Nani added a second shortly afterwards flicking in a Valencia cross. Nani was again the scorer of United's 3rd goal with a spectacular shot into the top corner of the German's net.

However Bayern Munich staged a fight back before half time and deservedly scored just before the break. The tie turned just a few minutes into the second half when United defender Rafael was sent off for a second bookable offence leavinghis team with just 10 men.

Ex-Chelsea player Robben scored Bayern's second with a fantastic volley sending his side into the semi-finals on the away goals rule.

Manchester United lost their place at the top of the Premier League when they were beaten 2-1 by new leaders Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Manchester United, without the influential Wayne Rooney, who is out with an ankle injury struggled in the fast half and were 1-0 down when Joe Cole flicked in a Malouda cross.

In the second half Manchester United improved but could not crack the Chelsea defence and Drogba came off the bench to add a controversial (off side) second goal.

Manchester United replied almost immediately when substitute Macheda bundled in from close range but Chelsea held out to seal a valuable victory.

Champions League 30/03/2010 QF 1st leg

Manchester United took the lead after just 64 seconds when Wayne Rooney crashed a Nani free kick into the top corner of the German's net.

Bayern Munich were soon back in the game and it was thanks to some fine saves from Manchester United keeper Van Der Sar that the score remained 0-1 at half time.

After the break Bayern Munich continued to play the better football but it wasn't until the 77th minute that Ribery scored with a deflected free kick. The game finished in dramatic circumstances with the Germans scoring in injury time to claim a 2-1 victory. Wayne Rooney limped off with an ankle injury and left Munich on crutches.

Dimitar Berbatov scored twice for Manchester United against Bolton at the Reebok Stadium in a 4 - 0 win keeping them at the top of the Premier League, just one point ahead of Chelsea.

Manchester United went ahead just before the break when Bolton defender, Samuel, turned the ball into his own net.

Berbatov added a second and third before Darron Gibson scored a fourth with a spectacular strike, even more impressive as it was his first touch of the ball after coming on as a substitute. Both Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand were left out of the Manchester United team by manager Sir Alex Ferguson as they were nursing minor injuries.

Manchester United went back to the top of the Premier League with a 2-1 win over arch rivals Liverpool. Liverpool took the lead after just 5 minutes when Torres haded in a Gerrard cross. United were level on 12 minutes when Valencia was awarded a penalty when he was pulled down inside the box.

Rooney's penalty kick was saved by Rienna but Rooney was quickly onto the rebound and slotted home. Park scored the winner for Manchester United with a diving header from a Fletcher cross in the 60th minute.

Three second half goals saw Manchester United go back to the top of the Premier League, 2 points ahead of Chelsea (who have a game in hand) and 3 points ahead of Arsenal.

Wayne Rooney scored twice taking his tally for the season to 32. His first goal came just 30 seconds into the secdond half when he was played in by Nani and shot into the bottom corner. He added a second before Berbatov rounded off the victory.

European Champions League 10/03/2010 (Last 16 - 2nd leg 3-2 agg)

Manchester United cruised into the quarter finals of this years Champions League with a 4 - 0 win over AC Milan making the aggregate score 7 - 2.

Manchester United took the lead after 13 minutes, Rooney heading in a Gary Neville cross. United were 2 - 0 up a minute after the break when Rooney again ran on to a brilliant Nani through ball and shot past the advancing Milan keeper. This brought Rooney's tally for the season to 30 goals and he now looks set to challenge Ronaldo's incredible total of 42 goals in the 2007-2008 season

Ji Sung Park had an excellent game and was rewarded when he added Manchester United's third goal. Former United star David Beckham came off the bench to a rapturous reception and he very nearly pulled a goal back for Milan with an excellent volley that Van Der Sar was forced to save. Darren Fletcher completed the victory with the fourth United goal.

Manchester United went back to the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Wolves at Molineux thanks to a second half goal from Paul Scholes. It was the Manchester United veteran midfielder's 100th goal in the Premier League.

United were without their in form striker Wayne Rooney who has an injured knee after his mid-week friendly game for England against Egypt at Wembley (3-1). Manager Sir Alex Ferguson blamed the heavy Wembley pitch for aggrivating the problem.

This was an evenly contested match and Wolves were guilty of a number of missed chances. Paul Scholes broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute when he seized onto a defender's mistake in the penalty box and drove his shot into the corner from 10 yards.

Carling Cup Final, Wembley 28/02/2010

Manchester United retaining the Carling Cup with a 2 -1 victory at Wembley on Sunday afternoon. United were forced to come from behind after Villa were awarded a penalty after just 3 minutes when Vidic pulled down Agbonlahor.

Milner kept his nerve with the penalty sending the Manchester United keeper Kuszczak the wrong way.

Manchester United fought back and were soon level when Michael Owen equalised with a fantastic strike. Unfortunately, Owen pulled up with a hamstring injury before half time and was replaced by substitute Wayne Rooney.

In the second half, Manchester United took control of the match and once again Wayne Rooney proved the match winner with a superb header from an Antonio Valencia cross.

Valencia was named 'Man of the Match'.

Wayne Rooney produced another brilliant display with another two goals for Manchester United taking his seasons tally to 27.

Rooney opened the scoring after 38 minutes with a powerful header from a Antonio Valencia cross. After the half time break Rooney added a second, almost identical goal, again heading past West Ham goalkeeper Rober Green from a Valencia cross.

Michael Owen scored United's third goal running on to a Paul Scholes pass.

Manchester United crashed to defeat to Everton at Goodison Park. Manchester United took the lead after 16 minutes with a goal from Berbatov. Everton hit back just 3 minutes later with a fantastic strike from Bilyaletdinov.

The game looked to be heading for a draw until Gosling netted for the home side. Everton added a third in injury time when substitute Jack Rodwell scored.

Champions League (last 16) First leg 16/02/2010

Manchester United take a 3-2 lead to Old Trafford for the second leg in three weeks time thanks to another awesome display by Wayne Rooney.

AC Milan took the lead after only 3 minutes. Former United star David Beckham's free kick was only partially cleared by a nervous United defence and Ronaldinho's shot took a wicked deflection to beat the helpless keeper, Van Der Sar.

Manchester United equalised in the 36th minute with a Paul Scholes goal.

After the break Wayne Rooney took the game by the scruff of the neck when he headed his first on 66 minutes. Eight minutes later he added his second and United's third with another superbly directed header from a Darren Fletcher cross. AC Milan pulled a goal back before the end but Manchester United must surely be favourites to reach the quarter finals.

Manchester United missed the chance to go back to the top of the Premier League with a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa. (League leaders Chelsea lost 2 -1 at Everton with ex-Man Utd player Louis Saga scoring both goals).

In an evenly contested match at Villa Park, the home side took the lead after 19 minutes with a fine strike from Cuellar. Four minutes later Manchester United equalised courtesy of a Collins own goal.

Manchester United went to the top of the Premier League with a 5 - 0 thrashing of bottom club Portsmouth.

Wayne Rooney opened the scoring with his 23rd goal of the season with a fine header. Manchester United were 2 - 0 up before half time when Nani's cross was deflected past Pompey keeper David James. Portsmouth's luck did not change in the second half with two further own goals. Berbatov also scored for Manchester United.

The brilliant Wayne Rooney struck his 100th Premier League goal as Manchester United thumped title rivals Arsenal 3 -1 and moved to within one point of leaders Chelsea.

Portugese winger Nani opened the scoring after 33 minutes when he tore down the right, cut inside two Arsenal defenders before crossing the ball towards the far post. Almunia, the Arsenal goalkeeper completely misjudged the flight of the ball and helped push it into his own net.

Four minutes later and Manchester United were 2-0 up. Rooney started a counter-attack from his own half. Nani was again involved charging down the right wing. His cross was met by Rooney who fired his shot into the far corner of the net.

Mancheter United added a third goal in the 52nd minute when Ji-Sung Park scored his first goal of the season.

Arsenal pulled a goal back in the 80th minute but Manchester United ran out convincing winners.

Carling Cup Semi Final (2nd Leg) 27/01/10

Manchester United secured their place in the final of the Carling Cup with a 3-1 win over bitter rivals Manchester City. Manchester United, the cup holders, will play Aston Villa at Wembley on 28th February 2010.

The first half saw the teams very closely matched with few chances and it was no surprise to so the sides go in at half time at 0-0.

In the second half the game came alive and Manchester United took the lead in the 56th minute when Paul Scholes drilled home a shot into the bottom corner of the net beating the Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given.

Manchester United could sense victory and another Wembley final and in the 71st minute they added a second goal when Michael Carrick's shot went in off a post.

But there was yet to be a twist in the tale. Former Manchester United player Carlos Tevez pulled a goal back for City in the 76th minute when he turned in a Craig Bellamy cross from an acute angle.

The match looked to be headed for extra time before the brilliant Wayne Rooney headed in a cross from Ryan Giggs to put Manchester United into the final.

Manchester United went to the top of the Premier League with a comfortable 4-0 win against Hull City with the brilliant Wayne Rooney scoring all four goals.

Rooney opened the scoring after 8 minutes when he latched on to a rebound from the Hull goalkeeper following a fierce Paul Scholes shot.

The score remained 1-0 at the break and it wasn't until the 82nd minute that Rooney added a second goal. Minutes later he completed his hat-trick when he headed home a beautiful cross from Nani.

Rooney scored his and United's fourth in stoppage time when he drilled home a shot from inside the box leaving the Old Trafford crowd chanting his name.

Carling Cup Semi-Final 1st Leg

At this enthralling game at Eastlands Manchester United took the lead after 15 minutes when Valencia found space on the right and fired in a cross to Wayne Rooney. City goolkepper Shay Given was only able to parry Rooney's shot into the path of Ryan Giggs who tapped in from 2 yards.

Manchester City began to find their feet as the first half progressed and were awarded a controversial penalty just before the break when Rafael was judged to have pulled Bellamy's shirt inside the penalty box. Manchester United old boy, Carlos Tevez stepped up to smash the penalty past the helpless Van Der Sar.

In the second half poor defensive play from Manchester United led to a second Manchester City goal when Tevez headed home from close range. Manchester United tried desperately to fight back but the City defensive held out to secure their team victory. They take their 2-1 advantage to Old Trafford for the second leg on 27 January 2010.

Premier League 16/01/10

Manchester United started the game nervously and although they had most of the possession in the first half it was Burnley who had the best chance. However, the teams were 0-0 at the break and it was Manchester United who took the lead when Berbatov forced a left foot shot home with the help of a deflection. Wayne Rooney soon added a second goal to calm United's nerves and it was left to Diouf to add a third on his Old Trafford debut.

Manchester United needed an own goal from Birmingham defender Scott Dann to escape with a 1-1 draw at St Andrew's.

Birmingham took the lead after 39 minutes when Manchester United failed to clear a corner and Cameron Jerome struck the ball past Tomasz Kuszczak, the United keeper.

United equalised in the 63rd minute when Dann turned an Evra shot into his own net.

United finished the game with 10 men when Darren Fletcher was sent off for a second bookable offence.

FA Cup 3rd - 03/01/2010

Manchester United crashed out the FA Cup with a 1-0 defeat by their bitter rivals Leeds United. The only goal of the game came in the 19th when Leeds United star Jermaine Beckford ran on to a long threw ball and slotted home past the Manchester United keeper at the Stretford End.

It is the first time Manchester United have been knocked out in the 3rd round of the FA Cup during managerSir Alex Ferguson's 23 year reign. The last time was 1984.

Sir Alex Ferguson was openly critical of his side's performance and promised to make changes for Manchester United's next game against Manchester City in the first leg semi final of the Carling Cup on Wednesday 06/01/2010.

Manchester United ended 2009 with a 5 – 0 thrashing of Wigan with Wayne Rooney once again delivering a masterclass. On a freezing night at Old Trafford Manchester United pulled within two points of leaders Chelsea and two points ahead of third placed Arsenal who have a game in hand.

Former Wigan star Antonio Valencia also had a fantastic game making three assists and scoring one, the final Premier League goal of 2009.

Wayne Rooney scored the first Manchester United goal arriving at the near post to meet Rafael Da Silva's cross and slot it past Kirkland, the Wigan goalkeeper.
Michael Carrick and Rafael added a second and third goal by half time. Berbatov and Valencia completed the rout with second half goals.
