Manchester City 2 Manchester United 1

Carling Cup Semi-Final 1st Leg

At this enthralling game at Eastlands Manchester United took the lead after 15 minutes when Valencia found space on the right and fired in a cross to Wayne Rooney. City goolkepper Shay Given was only able to parry Rooney's shot into the path of Ryan Giggs who tapped in from 2 yards.

Manchester City began to find their feet as the first half progressed and were awarded a controversial penalty just before the break when Rafael was judged to have pulled Bellamy's shirt inside the penalty box. Manchester United old boy, Carlos Tevez stepped up to smash the penalty past the helpless Van Der Sar.

In the second half poor defensive play from Manchester United led to a second Manchester City goal when Tevez headed home from close range. Manchester United tried desperately to fight back but the City defensive held out to secure their team victory. They take their 2-1 advantage to Old Trafford for the second leg on 27 January 2010.
